A Place Not to Rush

An unplanned journey down the A303, a pause at Stourhead, and the pleasure of finding somewhere that asks you to slow down.

Yesterday became an unplanned day trip—yet it was thoroughly fulfilling nonetheless.

The journey down the A303 took me past Stonehenge and through the rolling landscape surrounding it. Even from the road, there is something about this part of the country that makes you look beyond the immediate journey.

The drive was broken up by an unplanned visit to the National Trust’s Stourhead.

It proved to be both wonderfully relaxing and a feast for the visual senses: still water, autumn colour, carefully framed views and something new appearing around almost every corner.

There was no need to hurry, and hurrying would probably have missed the point.

Stourhead is not somewhere to complete. It is somewhere to notice.

Sometimes an unplanned stop becomes the part of the journey that stays with you.

This is truly a place not to rush. I think a return visit should be in my future.
